myUSCIS Know-How
Navigating the U.S. immigration system online has never been more accessible.
Here are some useful tips to help make your experience smoother on the myUSCIS portal.
1. Save your Backup Code. Ensuring that you choose a secure and unique password to protect your confidential information is not enough. You should also keep the Backup Code provided in case you lose access to your chosen authentication method.
2. Use a laptop or desktop computer, not your smartphone. It is recommended to use a full-size screen when completing steps to submit applications online or checking the status of an existing case. This is because the website may load incorrectly on smartphones or tablets, and it is easier to make errors this way, like pressing the wrong links or missing important information.
3. Check each tab for news about an existing case. It is not recommended to simply view the ‘Case Status’ tab when checking for developments, approvals, or notices. Even for cases with myProgress enabled, the most recent dispositive information will usually be displayed first under the ‘USCIS Notices’ section of the ‘Documents’ tab.
4. Save a version of your form for personal records. Be sure to download a draft of your form prior to submitting it. This will allow you to review the application without feeling pressured to advance or submit right away. You should also save the submitted copy by downloading the .pdf file under ‘View PDF’.
5. Make drafts of your responses before entering them. It is worthwhile to print the specific pages or otherwise make notes about the information requested, such as questions, personal details, and instructions. If you need to provide a textual answer, it is usually better to write the answer using a separate word processor first. In doing so, you can make edits or revise your composition over an extended amount of time without needing to login each time.
By following these tips, you can navigate the myUSCIS application portal more effectively and efficiently. Because myUSCIS is still in early stages of development and subject to change, our law firm is actively monitoring the myUSCIS user experience to make these and other future recommendations as necessary.
